Istanbul & London… 2 Wonderful Cities + Secda & Meral… 2 Creative Women = ONE Cool Brand!
I truly believe it is easier to have an idea regarding people’s likes, dislikes, ups and downs by the photos they take and share. The power of image is the key reason why I love Instagram this much. Each photo has a story, and people love sharing their own stories and witnessing other stories. A moment captured in another city or even in another country miles miles away, is only seen by another eye when it is visualized. I don’t even say how powerful it is when the images are turned into objects. You will understand what I mean as you continue reading the post. :]
There are some Instagram photos that I love going back again and again – they make me feel as if I were the one experiencing that very moment. Secda (@secdus) and Meral (@meral) are among those wonderful profiles I enjoy following on Instagram. Even though I’ve not been to London yet, upon checking Meral’s feed, I feel as if I’d already wandered on the wet pavements a million times. Or seeing one of Secda’s photos makes me feel as if I were there in person, resting my head on one of the pillows, lovely tea pots and cups by my side, I’m seizing “the moment.”
As a person believing in the power of “digital”, it is great to know that, they both also met online -on Instagram-, and this is how the cool brand “not a cute bow” was born. Please welcome the natural born digital brand “not a cute bow”; I’m happy to discover Secda’s and Meral’s story by some Q&A’s. :]
Who / what inspires you and your work?
The vibrant streets of big cities, the interesting characters who live in them and the light that brings them out or hides them. There are many photographers who have been an inspiration to me such Alex Webb, Saul Leiter, Cartier Bresson, and Vivian Maier are only a few who inspire me daily with their amazing work.
Describe your brand, “not a cute bow” in one word. Why that word?
In one word it would be difficult but let’s try: Handsome. Yes, handsome : ) When we were thinking about names we wanted it to reflect the idea of classy, masculine, minimal and a bit edgy. We wanted our cushions and home accessories to be wanted by male customers. As you can imagine most cushions lovers are primarily females. Funny enough when people read our brand name they say “Ohhh, how cute” so yes we are still cute : )
How would you want your audience to remember your brand?
Each cushion has a story behind them; from photography stage to production. They come with their stories to the new owner. We will try to share these stories with our audience in our blog. We hope that our audience will cherish these moments and add theirs on to it. I read this somewhere and it really struct me: When you receive a handmade item you’re receiving a connection to the maker through the time, effort and care they put into it. That everyday item, so often overlooked, becomes a little bit more meaningful when you know someone took time out of their day to make it for you, and that, in turn, makes the time you spend using it a little bit more special.
What kind of creative patterns, routines or rituals do you have?
I love walking around the streets with my camera especially in Shoreditch and Hoxton, mostly in East London. I love the characters that I find on the streets and each one of them are so unique in their own way. Sometimes I just find a good light in a lively area and wait…wait for a story to unfold. I like giving titles to my photos mostly humours ones. Such as the love handle one.

This is my creative outburst but then what really surprised me is that how Secda saw the potential in each photo and created amazing products out of them. As you can imagine I have started taking photos simply out of a hobby never thought of them coming to this stage. So I love the idea that how we complete each other and we have the same vision approaching from two different mediums.
What’s your favourite thing you’ve ever created?
It is always difficult to chose one but as a photographer while travelling in Thailand I took this one photo and the minute I clicked I knew it all came together and I still remember that moment.

What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life?
We have just fully launched our products on our website. I would love to see not a cute bow brand to grow worldwide. We started this with some big dreams. Both Secda and I, we are hungry for more creativity and our minds tick the same way and we feed each other in the most positive way.
I would also love to have more time to shoot. That’s always an issue when you are juggling many things at once.
We both feel that we are onto something which is quite unique and we would like to keep that and grow on it.
Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” – Paulo Coelho
It is really nice to see this new brand emerging with the collaboration of two beautiful and creative minds. Cushions and totes; I love all of them; if I have to pick I can say my personal favourites are Danger No Entry
