Product Description

Readers will travel back in time to ancient Babylonia, Egypt, and Greece. They will meet the world''s first astronomers, mathematicians, and physicists and explore the lives and ideas of such famous people as Pythagoras, Archimedes, Brahmagupta, al-Khwarizmi, Fibonacci, Ptolemy, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Hakim will introduce them to Aristotle—one of the greatest philosophers of all time—whose scientific ideas dominated much of the world for eighteen centuries.

In the three-book The Story of Science series, master storyteller Joy Hakim narrates the evolution of scientific thought from ancient times to the present. With lively, character-driven narrative, Hakim spotlights the achievements of some of the world''s greatest scientists and encourages a similiar spirit of inquiry in readers. The books include hundreds of color photographs, charts, maps, and diagrams; informative sidebars; suggestions for further reading; and excerpts from the writings of great scientists.

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 8 Up–In this first book in a projected series of six, Hakim has interwoven creation myths, history, physics, and mathematics to present a seamless, multifaceted view of the foundation of modern science. The acknowledgments page reads like a Who''s Who of the academic physics world, thanking the many researchers and experts who provided fact checking and advice. The entire volume is beautifully organized and the multidisciplinary approach to science is immediately apparent from the table of contents. Chapter headings contain subheadings prefaced by an image that indicates the focus of the chapter–science, math, language arts, technology and engineering, geography, or philosophy. Full-color photos and illustrations appear throughout; quotes and sidebars offer related information. The text never suffers from oversimplification and the writing holds its own with the many compelling visuals. Only a slight amount of fictionalization is evident with the author occasionally suggesting the possible thoughts of ancient groups pondering the mysteries of the universe. At its essence, the book displays the most appealing aspect of science and mathematics: that advances result from a practical need solved by curious minds. –Courtney Lewis, Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston, PA

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. Hakim opens the new Story of Science series with a book guaranteed to kick the history of science up a notch. Dividing the text into manageable sections with zingy titles ("Why Mars Is a Little Loopy"), she livens the writing with questions, asides, and changes of tense; recaps, restates, and refers back to important points; strews color illustrations with substantial captions thickly throughout; and sprinkles it all with fresh insights. Best of all, she respects the ability of young readers to absorb difficult ideas--whether that''s early developments in physics, or the discovery and refinement of mathematics and geometry. She''ll keep visual learners rapt, too, with lucid diagrams, photos, and art reproductions, and instead of drawn maps, she includes dramatic, lightly labeled satellite photos. Hakim does make a few bobbles (the Euclidian axiom "the whole is greater than the part" is incorrectly stated as "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts"), and her glances toward Asia and ancient Central America are too brief to change the Eurocentric focus. Still, this account of modern science''s dawn, up to the revolution engendered by moveable type, presents a rare mix of visual appeal, intellectual content, and lively personal voice that will propel readers to the end and leave them impatient for more. Please note that a science curriculum developed in conjunction with The National Science Teacher''s Association and John''s Hopkins University has been designed to go with each of Hakim''s Story of Science books. Teacher''s Quest Guide: Aristotle Leads the Way (The Story of Science)

This series may be a good fit for you and your middle school/ Jr. High level student(s) if:

1. You want your science in chronological order like you want your history in chronological order.
If something like Bauer''s Story of the World 1-4 and Greenleaf''s Famous Men of _________________ series appeal to you, you''ll probably like this too. This book begins with the earliest recorded history and works its way to the 1500s CE.

If you''re doing a 4 year history rotation:
Ancients for 1 year (1 year=4 quarters/2 semesters/3 trimesters)
Medieval for 1 year
Early Modern for 1 year
Late Modern for 1 year
then this science will finish ahead of your history. You could change the pace to match history more closely, you could supplement with something else to fill the gap or you would need to be OK with science and history not being on the same time frame.

If you''re doing a compressed history rotation in 3 years :
Ancients 3 semesters
Medieval 3 semesters
Early Modern 3 semesters
Late Modern for 3 semesters
Hakim''s science series will dovetail with your history nicely.

2. You want your science in historical context.
Science and history have always influenced each other and this curriculum reinforces that.

3. You want your science integrated with other subjects.
There are a few assignments in each lesson that include a related activity in math, history, literature, art, and/or language arts. This not only reinforces the historical context, it can help a child who isn''t particularly interested in science stay a little more engaged.

4. You want your science from a secular point of view, even if you''re religious.
The writers were respectful of religious views by stating in the teacher''s guide, page 10, "6. Ask students whether any human really knows for certain how the universe began. (Allow for religious convictions in accepting responses.)" As a Christian I appreciate that this material is both secular and uncompromising while still being polite to religious people.

5. You want an entire academic year''s worth of readings, assignments and activities in one package.
Get the textbook, the workbook and the teacher''s guide. If you plan and prep an entire year for a 36 hanging file folder system (or something like it) you''ll have to do a little adjusting because the number of lessons and units aren''t evenly divisible by a standard 36 week American school year. Twice a unit you''ll need to combine 2 lessons together;easily done.

6. You''re a homeschooler willing to adapt a classroom curriculum to your home setting.
Homeschoolers were kept in mind as this curriculum was written. Tweaking a bit here and there is simple. The only thing your student won''t be doing is group work, but those assignments can be easily tweaked for individuals.

I love the way Hakim weaves in history and personal stories and purchased all three books! In my opinion does a better job than Tiner''s series. Can''t comment on Bauer''s series as they came out later than Hakim''s and I''m not familiar with them.

The reason I didn''t rate these books 5 stars are because the pages are too busy with information snippets - may be hard for many readers to stay with the main reading.

Also, please be aware that even though the title is "The Story of Science" is doesn''t cover biological and earth sciences so it really isn''t the "full" story of science.

I used traditional approach for homeschooling middle school aged children and these 3 books worked really well as my science spine, supplementing with the library, YouTube and other resource.

Even though I''m done with homeschooling, have retained these books in my library as they are still fun to pick up and read. My sister who recently visited with her elementary kids picked it up and read some of the stories with her kids before bed.

Given the way the book is constructed - might be good for a waiting room environment or bathroom reading.

I tried and wanted to love this book based on so many positive reviews. However, neither my son nor I could take reading this. It was a snooze fest and so much info on mathematics! I know math and science go together. I get that. Also, there was too much history for my son''s liking. The reviews were so great and I just don''t see how. I am open-minded and love to read different views on life but this book was just too boring. Only made it a few chapters in before finally giving up.

I use it for homeschooling. Fun to read, absolutely full of food for thought. Somewhere between a science and a history book, it brings you into the world of ancient people and how they thought of the world with the knowledge they had. We''re about halfway through the book. I read it aloud to my 2nd and 5th graders - they beg for more. But this book is so full of information, I limit them to a chapter a day so they can process and narrate what they''ve already heard. Joy Hakim''s style is engaging and fun, never dull and dry.

My 10 year old daughter is using this textbook in an online course through the Gifted Homeschoolers Forum. Its a lovely introduction to science as the growth and development in human knowledge. It introduces science as a narrative as humans observed and theorized and tested their theories about science. My daughter clearly finds classical history far more entertaining than I ever did as a result of this textbook! I''m excited that she will have this approach to science for three years as we follow Joy Hakim into the modern era over time.

Joy Hakim is very knowledgable, not only of how science works, but also the way in which people learn best - through stories. There is not a great deal of straight science content in this book, but it certainly is a fantastic learning tool to help remember people and scientific pedagogy. This text makes science history seem real and fresh, with the added bonus of literature and historical and mathematical factoids that connect science to the larger scope of knowledge and education.
